The Craft & Hobby Association Winter Conference & Trade Show was awesome. On Monday afternoon of the show, with the support of LA’s Best (more about this amazing organization later), I had the honor of sponsoring a Kids Craft Fair with several other CHA representatives at an after-school program for about 200 children at Hoover Elementary.
Art – just like love – is truly a universal language. Many of the student’s at the Los Angeles city school spoke primarily Spanish, but there were no language barriers! Communicating was simple since we shared a common bond of expressing our thoughts and feelings through creativity.
Imagine hundreds of kids with access to unlimited craft supplies. Generous CHA members donated Styrofoam, stickers, decorative paper, glue, paint markers, foam shapes, stickers, gems and more, filling the tables with treasures. The kids giggled and worked on their crafty headbands, pocket monsters, scrapbook art squares, door hangers and visor projects while paparazzi snapped away.
Yes, paparazzi! I was lucky enough to work alongside celebrity CHA ambassador Candy Spelling. She rolled up her sleeves and connected with the children one at a time in a way that made them feel special and loved. I think there is something truly cool about a celebrity taking the time to play with the supplies and connect with kids.
I left the school feeling incredibly touched and inspired by LA’s Best after-school program and those who run it. So much so, that I’ve decided to get involved even though I live on the other side of the country.
I believe that all kids deserve access to art supplies and craft projects that promote their creative and social growth. If you feel the same, I challenge everyone who reads this to do something to make a difference in your own community! No matter where you may live, kids likely need support of resources (supplies or time!). A great place to start is your local elementary school, Boys and Girls Club or existing after-school programs. Please comment here and share any ideas you have about helping kids get crafty and I’ll do the same. Believe me, you’ll feel so energized and inspired.
