Felt is just so much fun to work with. It is easy to cut, easy to stitch on and comes in so many bright fun colors. I LOVE it almost as much as I love buttons and polka dotted ribbon.
I cut out all of my pieces first and gather up the buttons/ribbon that I want to use. I stitch with a sharp needle with a big eye and use matching colors to the felts of embroidery floss.
First, stitch your two main ornament pieces together. Don’t worry about knots showing. It is part of the handmade look for this project.
You can sew pieces that stick out (like this tree trunk) as you go or add them afterwards, depending on the look you want.
Before closing it shut, stuff it if you want it to have a 3D look. You can use stuffing or your felt scraps.
Then add your ribbon hanger. You can sew a button over the top of the stitches to give it a “finished” look. The green button is Laura Kelly’s Forest Green from Buttons Galore.
Add your buttons to finish up. These red buttons are also from Buttons Galore. They are Laura Kelly’s Radically Red.
If you want to be super creative and outrageously fun, sew a little pocket on the back for hiding gifts in the Christmas tree!
There are LOTS of ways to sew felt ornaments together! Get our your supplies, put on some Christmas carols (or the movie Elf if you want to laugh while you work) and have a blast!
What would you want to get in a little pocket on the back of a handmade felt orament? Me, new Sharpie markers of course.
Happy Holiday Creating,
