Today is National Dog Day.
It has a whole new meaning with Piper in our family. Did you know that Colorado has the most amazing resources for dogs, everywhere. The shop owners keep bowls outside for the dogs to stay hydrated with fresh water which I think is so kind. Here are a two of our favorite dog spots near our new home in Aurora.
Cherry Creek State Park’s Off Leash Dog Park is amazing! Check out these pictures.
Here is a fun treat you can bake to celebate this day!
- 1 Cup Oats (Quaker Oats)
- 1/3 Cup Butter (Land O Lakes)
- 1 Cup Boiling Water
- 2 Cubes Beef Bouillon
- 1 Cup Cornmeal
- ¼ Cup Milk
- 1 Cup Shredded Mild Cheese
- 2 ½ Cups Whole Wheat Flower (King Arthur)
- 2 Eggs Beaten
Here is what to do:
Mix the cornmeal, milk, cheese and beaten eggs in a large bowl and set aside. Mix the oats, butter, water and bouillon cubes in a pan and heat until boiling then add to big bowl and mix. Add the flour until mixture is stiff enough to form a ball.Press mixture onto a floured counter top (about ¼ inch thick or so) and cut shapes with cookie cutters.Cook on greased cookie sheets at 325 degrees for 30-40 minutes until hardened. This is the first time that nobody in my family wanted to eat the last bit of dough or lick the beaters. I think it was the meat smell!
And now a little fun fact fun. “Dog Day has been supported by such high profile individuals as former US President George W Bush whose own dog, Barney the Scottish terrier has his own website and has even starred in a series of short films.
Happy National Dog Day,
