I have been exploring the art of ceramics (specifically Duncan brand) and slowly slowly slowly gaining confidence. It is an incredible way to create masterpieces that will last lifetimes but truth…it is not all easy peasy paint and be done. There are lots of steps. They all matter. And I am excited that I am getting them down. I made a garland with ceramic starts for our master bedroom fireplace celebrating the new year and my word for 2015…’grace’.
These are the steps.
I picked my ceramic pieces and sponged them off to remove any dust or debris.
I painted them black with Duncan Concepts (3 coats to get a thick even look), letting each coat dry in between. Then I added the numbers and words with White French Dimensions (also from Duncan) and let it dry completely overnight.
With some help from my husband to get the glaze the perfect consistency (super important), I glazed the stars to get them ready to go in my fabulous Skutt kiln. I think it is fascinating that the glaze is GREEN. The science behind ceramics is deep.
Then they dried completely before being fired, alongside pieces created by my kids and their friends and their moms.
I fired the stars and when I opened the kiln, TA DA…I smiled big. SUCCESS! I strung them together with white ribbon and hung up the garland. I love it. It is awesome and I MADE IT!
Happy New Year!
