Use polymer clay to create a darling fairy garden!

DIY Fairy Garden in Bucket

Fairies Fairies Fairies.  We LOVE Fairies.  We believe in them and we believe in their magic.  A while back I posted about our trip to Tagawa Gardens and the making of our first fairy garden.  With the snow on the ground and the crazy Colorado weather, we decided to create a little fairy magic that we could have in our home.  We used Sculpey clay (Bake Shop for kids) and made a mushroom house in a fairy size to create a fairy home in a jar. Let’s Create a Fairy Garden using clay.

Upcycled Wheelbarrow Fairy Garden

If you love fairy gardens, you can make this project on a much bigger scale in an old wheelbarrow. The directions for that are here on the blog too.

My #fairygarden in the wheelbarrow is growing like crazy! I love it so so much. @tagawagardens has the best tiny plants ever. Yay for springtime!! #fairies #garden

Materials and Supplies Needed

  • Jar, Bucket or Terra Cotta Planter filled with Soil
  • Sculpey Bake Shop
  • Decorative Rocks
  • Raffia or Imitation Grass

Make a Clay Mushroom

To make a clay mushroom that will stand tall in a fairy garden, use these simple directions.

Step One

Start by rolling small piece of softened red clay into a circle of sorts. It does not have to be perfect.

Add white balls then roll them into the red.

Mold the clay over a marble or small ball then create a thick sturdy stem from another color of clay, brown is suggested.

Stick the stem to the inside of the molded top then add a straightened paperclip to the bottom center of the stem.

Bake following direction in packaging.

Step Two

Fill your pail or planter or jar with soil. Tie a fun bow to the handle. Add some foliage, real or fake.

Add rocks to create a little path and fairy dolls. You can get the directions to make them here on the blog too.

When the mushrooms and whatever else you made with clay are cooled from the oven, add them to the garden.

Here is another version in a planter.

Create a Fairy Garden in a Jar

Use the same elements and add them to a jar instead of a terra cotta planter. Ta Da!  Isn’t it adorable!  Crafting in jars is such fun.  I love this bunches because it is so magical and is simply sure to draw fairies indoors from the cold.

TIPS for Working with Kids Using Clay

Here are my top five tips if you plan to share clay crafting with kids.

  1. Create a clean work surface.  Getting dirt in the clay is frustrating.
  2. Have the appropriate tools.  A little roller is super helpful.
  3. Only open the needed colors.
  4. Create alongside kids, role modeling the process.
  5. Practice before trying to make a masterpiece.
