Chair Pockets for the Elementary Classroom

I am so honored this week to be the guest co-sponsor of Craft Lightning with projects around the blogosphere that share ideas that can be crafted in fifteen minutes or less!   For day one (today!) I am sharing these chair pockets for the elementary classroom using one of the dies I designed for Ellison Education…the apple of course!  Back when I was a teacher, I had a classroom mom who made these for all of my students and I LOVED them.  We used them every day to keep the kiddos organized.  Little did I ever know that I would be doing what I am today and designing products that teachers use.  Welcome to the first of FIVE days where I will be sharing ideas for the elementary classroom that are speedy, functional and fun!

Well, here it is…

Easy Sew Chair Pockets for Classroom

You will need fabric the height of the back of the chair and three times the width of the back plus an extra two inches for sewing space, felt (I heart Kunin), threaded sewing machine, scissors and ribbon/buttons.

Supplies

Use a die-cut machine to cut out your apple.  I cut out two extra layers to create a brown stem and green leaf.  You can either sew them to the fabric OR glue them when you are done.

The sewing is literally 3 straight lines so the beginnerest (made up word) of beginners can do this project.

Steps

  1. Fold 1/3 over and sew across the bottom.
  2. Fold the other 1/3 over like a pamphlet and sew up the two sides.
  3. Add your additions and decorations.  Fabric glue works great with felt!

Additions

Ta Da!  It is so cute.  Of course black with white polka dots are my jam and that board book is filled with illustrations that I doodles.  It is sold through Ollie Bollie Books along with seven others.

Looking down from the top you can see into the pocket.  If you want the pocket to be deeper, that “third” of the fabric needs to be a little bit longer and gathered than the last third when you sew up the sides.
