Easy Sew Dog Bandana Pattern

This easy sew bandana pattern makes great gifts for all of your furry little friends.

They are actually great for dogs and cats too.  The bandannas are so fun and simple that our Girl Scout troop made 25 of them to sell at the High School craft festival and they SOLD OUT!  Sewing is a great way to create handmade gift for not only the people you love, but for your pets too.  I love that this easy sew dog bandana pattern fashion piece is easy enough for kids to make which means they are perfect for beginners on the sewing machine. I love this easy dog bandana pattern.

Whip up an easy sew dog bandana that goes OVER the collar so doesn’t slip off.

Supplies and Materials Needed for Bandanas

To create a dog (or cat) bandana, you will need the following supplies and materials.

  • Sewing Machine – I LOVE the Heavy Duty machine by Singer. It works great with kids and they can be pretty rough.
  • Fabric (1/2 Yard Per Bandanna)
  • Fabric Scissors
  • Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat
  • Long Straight Pins
  • Dog Bandana Pattern (Enlarge for Larger Dogs)

My Favorite Sewing Supply List

These are the sewing supplies that I keep on hand at all times. They get used over and over again and again in so many of my projects.

Directions to Make Easy Sew Dog Bandanas

Step One

Start by cutting out your fabric.  Use the pattern to cut out TWO matching pieces (front and back) for each bandana.

Step Two

Cut a front and a back piece. The fabric for the front and back do not have to be the same.  I pinned my pattern to the fold then used a rotary cutter on a my cutting mat to get straight cuts.

Step Three

Pin the fabric pieces together with the sides you want to be showing facing each other on the inside.

Step Four

Sew around the edges with a straight stitch leaving an opening in the middle of the top large enough to turn your fabric right side out. These bandanas are simple even even there are several steps because of the great dog bandana pattern.

Step Five

Flip the fabric. When you do this, there will be a little bit of an area that will still need to be sewn shut. Tuck the fabric here in to match up with the sewn edges. Iron if you would like.

Step Six

Sew a straight stitch across the top of the bandanna to close the hole.

Step Seven

Fold the top down to the corner and pin in place.  Use a zig zag stitch and sew over the straight stitch you just did creating a pocket for the collar to be fed through.  Trim all threads.

Put the bandanna on your pet’s collar and celebrate how awesome it his to have a furry friend.

Look how darling Koda is her new accessory made with the free dog bandana pattern. I am not sure if she is more excited about this new bandana or the bone!

  1. These bandanas are so cute and fun! I love the doggy fabrics you used. I need to make one for my cat!

  2. These are so cute! I’m often not sure about a full pet dressing up costume idea as sometimes the pet is not that keen on it but these are fun and comfy for any dog to wear.
